Checking local public holidays before confirming the event date

A committee has a preferred date for an event in KL, Selangor or Seremban and has to confirm it is not affected by a public holiday.

Opens WhatsApp with a draft you can edit before sending. Nothing is sent automatically.

Optional: send a short event brief

The short answer

For each candidate date, record which calendar applies, where you read it and when. Build the log alongside the event milestone back-planner, so a date is confirmed only after it has been checked against a source.

Do not assume a holiday falls on the same date as last year. Check the current calendar each time, and check again before invitations go out.

Check the date against a named source

The national government portal links to a public holiday calendar. State governments, such as Selangor's, are the place to look for state-level notices, and Kuala Lumpur matters sit with the federal territory authorities.

Log the source and the day you read it. A date that was clear a month ago can change.

What to verify for each candidate date

Each check is a question with who answers it.

  • Which calendar applies to the venue's state or federal territory? Answered by the organiser, from the venue address, and confirmed on the official source.
  • Does the calendar show a holiday on, or next to, the candidate date? Answered by the organiser, reading the official page on the day and logging the date read.
  • Does any observance depend on an announcement made close to the date? Answered by the organiser, by asking the venue and checking the official source again before sending invitations.
  • Does the date fall in school or institution breaks that matter to your attendees? Answered by the committee, from its own members' calendars.
  • Who rechecks the date, and when? Answered by the committee, as a named owner with a date.

How the areas differ for this decision

Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan are different jurisdictions, so a state-level notice from one does not automatically apply to the others. Confirm which state or federal territory the venue address sits in.

The national portal gives the federal view; the Selangor government portal is the state source for a Selangor address. For Seremban or Nilai, check the Negeri Sembilan state source and the venue.

Worked example · Fictional example

A fictional date check

Fictional organisation and figures, for illustration only.

A fictional professional association wants a Thursday in its second quarter for a Selangor seminar. The log records the national calendar link, the Selangor state source and the day each was read.

The committee confirms the date only after both were read, and sets a recheck two weeks before invitations. All dates are illustrative.

Handle it in-house, or bring in help?

Your team can usually handle this when

  • A single date well away from any known holiday, checked against the official source.
  • An event for an audience that is not affected by holidays.

Outside planning help earns its fee when

  • Several candidate dates across more than one state.
  • The event is repeating and the committee is assuming last year's pattern.
  • Dates are being shared with speakers and sponsors before they are verified.

Want your dates checked and logged before invitations go out?

A planning diagnostic can review your candidate dates, set up the verification log with owners and rechecks, and report what it finds. It does not decide for you and does not predict the calendar. Send the candidate dates and venue addresses.

Questions organisers ask

Can I reuse last year's holiday list?

No. Check the current official calendar for each date.

Which source should I use?

The official national and state portals, read on the day and logged.

Does a Selangor holiday apply in KL?

Do not assume. Confirm the venue's state or territory and read that source.

Is there a local office?

No office is claimed. On-site arrangements are agreed for the particular brief.

  1. MyGovernment Portal, Jabatan Digital Negara (JDN) (checked 2026-10-07). The national portal links to a public holiday calendar; check it, and the state source, for the exact date
  2. Portal Rasmi Kerajaan Negeri Selangor, Kerajaan Negeri Selangor (checked 2026-10-07). The Selangor State Government portal is the state-level source to check for state notices
  3. Portal Rasmi DBKL, Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) (checked 2026-10-07). DBKL is the official portal of the Kuala Lumpur city authority, so a Kuala Lumpur address starts here
